Welcome to the April Edition of the Allotment Newsletter!
April brings longer days, warmer weather (mostly!), and plenty to do on the plot. It’s the true start of the growing season, and things are about to get busy – in the best way!
Happy gardening!
Rent Is Due! - Rent payments are due by the end of this month. Please find a committee member on site or in the shop to make payment.
First Aid Kit - After a suggestion made at the AGM, we now have a first aid kit available on site. This is located within the compost toilet building. Please can all members keep an eye on stock of the kit and alert a committee member if we are running low on supplies.
April Notices:
Here’s a look at some essential tasks for allotment gardeners this month.
Direct sow outdoors: Beetroot, lettuce, spinach, radishes, chard, and turnips – get those rows going!
Sow under cover: Courgettes, pumpkins, cucumbers, and sweetcorn will thrive with a warm start.
Plant second early and maincrop potatoes.
Harden off indoor seedlings ready for transplanting outdoors later this month.
Weed regularly – they’re waking up too!
Fruit & Flowers:
Feed fruit trees and bushes with a potassium-rich fertilizer.
Plant new strawberry plants and check existing ones for slugs and disease.
Add pollinator-friendly flowers like calendula, nasturtiums, or borage around the plot.
Top Tip:
Water newly sown seeds gently but consistently – April showers help, but don’t rely on them entirely!
Toolbox Check:
Install supports for peas and beans now to save time (and avoid damaging roots later).
Spring has Sprung!
Enjoy the energy on the plot – it’s a month of promise, progress, and plenty of fresh air.
Happy growing!
