Welcome to the March Edition of the Allotment Newsletter!
March is here, and with it comes the excitement of a new gardening year. The soil is beginning to warm, daylight is stretching longer, and it’s time to shake off winter and get growing!
Happy gardening!
The AGM (Annual General Meeting) - The AGM was held on the 19th March. We had a great turnout of members and some positive suggestions to improve the site. The committee will discuss any suggestions at their next meeting.
Plot Inspections - As we are now officially in the growing season, the committee will be conducting monthly plot inspections. These inspections help to ensure all of the plots are being cared for to an acceptable standard, and stops them falling into a bad state.
March Notices:
Here’s a look at some essential tasks for allotment gardeners this month.
Prepare your soil: Clear weeds, dig in compost, and rake beds ready for sowing.
Sow undercover: Start tomatoes, chillies, aubergines, and herbs indoors or in a greenhouse.
Direct sow outdoors: Broad beans, carrots, parsnips, and early peas can go in the ground now.
Plant potatoes: Begin chitting your first earlies and get them in by the end of the month.
Fruit care: Prune currants and gooseberries, and mulch fruit trees and bushes.
Top Tip:
Cover bare soil with fleece or cloches to warm it up – this gives your seeds a head start when sowing directly.
In the Shed:
Now's a great time to check your tools, clean pots and trays, and organize your seed stash. A little prep goes a long way later!
Watch the Weather – March can be unpredictable. Keep an eye out for late frosts and protect young plants as needed.
Happy digging and sowing!
